East Coast USA road trip

We have booked flights and car hire for a 2 week road trip starting in Boston at the start of the summer school holidays. I'm looking for ideas of places to visit, tips, etc. We are a couple and a 10 year old boy.

We've been before, about 14 years ago, but visited in May when we didn't have to book hotels/B&Bs/motels in advance but could just turn up. Would that be possible in July? Last time we headed north to Maine, then on to Vermont, NYC (stayed in hotel outside the city and visited by train for the day), Rhode Island and Cape Cod. This time the only places on our list so far is Cape Cod and NYC again. Are there any interesting places to visit but headed more of a southern/western direction? In Boston we will be getting tickets to the Red Sox and the duck tour as we missed out on both last time.

Any tips on discount coupons/vouchers to sign up for, etc. Tips for places to visit. Or if there are threads on here already please direct me to those.

Thanks!
