If it was my house, I certainly wouldn't have let it get to the state it is, and if I had, well it would be my own fault wouldn't it? I absolutely cannot believe you are all defending the landlord, what he has done is completely indefensible.
The whole bathroom could be considered unsafe, and in fact they are calling out a structural engineer as it has got to that stage - as the floor boards are soaked through and pouring through to downstairs. And how dare you call me a fool. I can't believe you guys are ignoring that we have brought this to his attention for the past 2 years. I quote this from Citizens Advice website:
What happens if your landlord allowed your home to get into a poor state of repair?
The situation is slightly different if you have to move out of your home because your landlord failed to do repair work when you first told them and now your home is in such a poor state of repair.
In this situation, you can find reasonable alternative accommodation. Your landlord will have to pay for the accommodation and moving expenses as part of the compensation they owe you for not meeting their legal repair obligations. You may also be able to claim compensation for the inconvenience of having to go to the trouble of finding other accommodation.

The letting agents have attempted to fix the problem with their own authorise trusted contractors, but the landlord refuses as he wants to use his el cheapo mates who never fix the issue. The Letting Agent themselves have told me this, from speaking to them it sounds as if they are not impressed with the landlord either.
If it was for one night, I could make alternative arrangements with a friend, but this is for multiple nights, and purely because of the landlords own doing.Despite my name, I'm not a student any more0 -

There is no need to be rude and resort to name calling. I don't know what I've done to offend you so much.
But regardless they are the people that I have a contract with and do business with, they rang me as a matter of urgency as the situation suddenly got bad, I co-operated as I don't want to fall through the floor and seriously injure myself.Despite my name, I'm not a student any more0 -

Well this is my point, I've also really co-operated with the LL for the past 2 years, every time he has wanted one of his mates to have a look at the work I have always co-operated. It's not right that both me and my neighbour have made him aware of this issue for such a long time and then have to deal with the bill of alternative accommodation when his inactivity has caused a bigger issue. I don't understand why everyone is defending the landlord.Despite my name, I'm not a student any more0 -
This is a public forum, and I agree, to call you a fool is just silly, but you have asked for opinions, and you've got them - just becase you don't like them, doesn't mean they're invalid.
My own opinion is that, despite the issue having gone on for some time, you are over reacting in deciding the property is unuseable just because here is no shower & wet floorboards.
Ultimately, as you've said, the choice is yours - give them an ultimatum and time limit to sort it, in writing and look elsewhere if you're still not happy.0 -
Also, 'if I owned the property' - I don't, I'm renting, therefore the landlord has a right to make sure that the property is in good order - if I bought a house, then obviously that is down to me. Just because I'd be in this situation if I had bought a house, doesn't make it right in this case.Despite my name, I'm not a student any more0

Honestly I think if you guys could see the flat downstairs you would change your tune - the water is flooding in. The floor can't be safe - other people I know who have seen the floor have agreed.
I'm not saying your opinions are invalid, but I just don't see how you guys can say that I have no rights in this reguard - if the landlord had reacted quickly then yeah it's an issue of give and take, but after 2 years.... it's not give and take, it's just take from the landlords side - he's had no issue taking my full payment of rent for these last two years when things have been getting worse - I just don't see how it's fair that I'm potentially going to be out of pocket.Despite my name, I'm not a student any more0 -

The leak has only got that bad in the past day or so, but it's been leaking for the past 2 years. I'm not being funny, but I'm not taking any of the blame - if I had stopped using the shower days ago, or even months ago, the LL would just have taken that as a sign that the problem had gone away and not fixed it - honesty he's been a truly useless landlord over the past 2 years, he's a reluctant landlord, he only became a landlord because he couldn't sell the property.Despite my name, I'm not a student any more0
