refers to old 20 mph limit but otherwise deals with those tractors allowed to travel faster

    https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/255975/consultation-document.pdf

The maximum speed limit for conventional tractors with or without a trailer is
currently 40mph, as set out in the Road Traffic Regulation Act
    2
    . However, the
Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986
    3
    (the “C&U Regs”) set
out certain technical requirements for tractors and requires those that are
driven above 20mph to meet certain requirements, including the fitment of
brakes meeting truck standards, including Anti-lock Braking System (ABS).
Most tractors do not comply with these requirements so legally can only be
used at speeds up to and including 20mph

So - just to clarify/check what I have picked up today -

Most 'ordinary' tractors have a speed limit of 25mph (actually 40kph raised up from the old 20mph)

These bigger faster tractors, assuming they have truck-style brakes, ABS etc, have a speed limit of 40mph.

Have I got it right - no tractor should be doing over 40mph?

Don't forget the single carriageway HGV limit's just gone from 40 to 50mph. I suspect that fast tractors are regarded as HGVs, so that'd also apply to them.

You're right Adrian - but that increase only applies in England & Wales - not in Scotlandshire.

But there is a 'trial' raising of the HGV limit to 60mph on the A9.

Oops - sorry I got that wrong it's a 50mph trial on the single carriageway parts.

Most of the big trucks have a speed limiter of course - set to 90kph which is 56mph so they could only do 60mph going downhill.

Presumably that'll be on the way South as everyone knows it's uphill all the way to Scotland. :D;)

What a crazy country the UK is - with different speed limits in different parts of the it.

No wonder the foreign truckers are confused.

I wonder speed limits tractors and HGVs have in NI?

Whilst I broadly agree with your rant, doing 50 in a 60 limit on your driving test, without any good external reason not to be doing 60, would result in a fail.

That is very true. But then the driving test is very much a one size fits all system.

Imo 50 is a reasonable speed even in good weather. Driving at 50 can feel very different to driving at 60, especially in some cars.
If I'm honest I sit 60-65. But I've previously had a fiesta which I didn't feel safe at all in doing 60.

There are those that argue 50 is holding people up, but realistically it's cost you very little time as those are usually the cars you get overtaken by just to catch them up at the next junction.
Although they are often the drivers that feel entitled to do 60 whilst forgetting everybody else's entitlement to be reasonably comfortable.

If a driver isn't "comfortable" driving at 60mph in conditions where it would be perfectly appropriate, then - frankly - they should probably consider getting more tuition or hanging up their licence.

    And as for...

...did you consider fixing whatever problems that car had, or scrapping it? Because a vaguely modern car that isn't "safe" at a speed well within its design limits is clearly broken. Hell, my 35yo Land Rover will cruise happily at 60.

Not so, the speed limit for hgv's on the A9 is 50 mph- up from 40 mph previously.

Sorry - yes you are right - I got that wrong - it's a 50mph trial on the single carriageway parts and the dual carriageway stays at 50 as before. :o

I didn't say anything was wrong with it! I said I didn't feel comfortable going too fast in it!

    Frankly your arrogance astounds me!

If you think everybody from an 18year old with a new license to a 70 year old with slower responses should meet your needs then you need to open up your mind!
