MBNA PPI claim - a letter every 21 days

In January I made a claim for PPI in relation to an old MBNA credit card, the policy was taken out in the 90's. Since then I have received a letter once every 21 days confirming they are 'gathering the information required to enable a final response to be issued', and that they expect to be able to issue a response within 21 days. And then; you guessed it, I receive an exact copy of the letter 21 days later stating that they are gathering information and should be able to get back to me within 21 days. During this time (February) they called me once to ask questions regarding the policy, and again stated they should come to a final decision within 21 days. But; I just get another letter buying them another 21 days with a leaflet enclosed informing me that I am entitled to take my case to the Financial Ombudsman.
Has anybody else been faced with the repeated 21 days letters? and if so how many did you receive until a final outcome was reached? Are they just trying to get you to refer the case to draw the process out further?
Thanks in advance for any advice/shared experiences.

They have 8 weeks to respond to a complaint. If they don't respond in that time you can refer your complaint to the FOS.
If you do that, youll wait up to 2 years for a result [positive OR negative]
It depends on what you want to do. Wait a few weeks longer, or refer your case and potentially wait months.Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0 -
My Nephew had the same, this when on for 2 months one of the reasons is he moved address and they also wanted very exact information on his salary going back to 2000 and they also asked security questions.
But the out come is that he was awarded £7000 refund,it is best just to wait and see, hopefully you will be successful.0
