Help with RAM please!

Hi everyone,

I have an acer T120E and it currently has 256MB RAM and 40GB hard drive.

I have upgraded the hard drive today to a 500 GB External one.

I am looking into upgrading the RAM to 2GB ( I think this is the max I can have)

Where can I buy the RAM cheap, also is this the best way to increase my speed

Thank you

Cheap RAM always leads to problems. Go to https://www.crucial.com/uk and use their memory selector tool.

Depending on your use, you may see no difference above 1GB.

Retail branded 2Gb RAM will set you back ~£65 (e.g. OCZ 2Gb). I agree with Conor that it may not be worth going over 1Gb. Btw, the motherboard has 2 slots only, so if you go for 2Gb (2x1Gb) you cannot use the original 256Mb module.

Cheap RAM can lead to problems as Conor mentions, but not if you can get good RAM for cheap! You can buy secondhand branded memory off eBay*, which is the cheapest in my experience - 1Gb search / 2Gb search (some incompatibles may turn up, so be aware)

Adding RAM is the easiest & cheapest way to increase speed - so yes the best. G

*Searches are for compatible, branded (non-generic) RAM - included in the search: Corsair, OCZ, Kingston, Micron, HP, GeIl, Patriot, Crucial, Rendition, Mushkin, PNY, Samsung, Infineon, Nanya, Hynix. Going for the faster PC3200 will give you a slight edge.

Best to avoid the 'high density' variety. An example of this - it's mentioned in the description, but some are not as easy to spot (ask here if you're in doubt before bidding/purchasing). Make sure it's non-ECC too.
