Trying to get a mortgage

Hi
I had a mortgage back in 2009 with and ex partner. We spilt and sold the house and settled the mortgage in 2010.
Due to not really planning ahead and being a bit silly I got myself in a bit of a pickle when the bank agreed to lend me 10k for me and My partner at the time. He became out of work on several occasions and I struggled to pay for my bills and his. Long story short I had to go on a DMP.
Fast forward to now and I cleared all my debt 18 months ago and have been trying to rebuild my credit score. One account I had in the DMP even though they agreed the terms HSBC still defaulted in 2010. I'm trying to get a mortgage but the mortgage advisor said I have no chance at all for at least another 2 years. I apparently count as a first time buyer as its been so long since I had a mortgage however I'm not eligible for the 5% deposit.
I'm employed full time. Have no dependants and earn a very good wage. I have no outgoings other than the rent and bills. Which I share with my partner.
My question is that if default 'falls off' my fill next year (and so will my original mortgage) will I be able to get a mortgage? (Can't get a joint on btw for other reasons. It has to be me and I can well afford it on my own)
