How is the list of Sunday Times 100 Best companies to work for compiled?

Hi Folks

Does anybody know How is the list of Sunday Times 100 Best companies to work for compiled?

The reason why I'm asking is because there are a few companies on that list for which I know people who worked there, but didn't enjoy their work !!

Thanks

It's done via a questionnaire of a certain proportion of employees of the companies who want to take part.

My girlfriend actually went for a job in HR at a company featured on this list. Turns out they were very selective as to who answered these surveys and any employees who were anything but entirely happy with the company were shunned. In fact she refused the job as their practices were dubious at best and people seemed unhappy there. I'd go as far as to suggest this list is mostly meaningless.

I worked for a company that was so proud of it's Top 100 placing but we all knew we had to answer the survey in a certain way to improve our ranking when, in actual fact, a lot of us didn't enjoy working there!

Why am I not surprised? The best company to work for is one's own I think.

All those employee surveys are supposed to be anonymous. So why pander to them by answering the way they want rather than the way you want to.

If you think your bos is a clueless idiot and the company allows a bullying ethos, then answer the survey accordingly. At the end of the day, who cares if it costs the company it's top 100 best place to work place.

What was the point in that comment? We are talking about the 100 top employers that people might consider working for.

This might be in terms of employee relations, ethics, opportunities to rise etc.

In addition, working for yourself is not a guaranteed garden of roses, either.

It's great to be paid and not have to worry about the sales side of things - having to deal with refuseniks with tight wallets or budgets. One can go home and forget until a new day dawns!!

Plus, it's great to paid a stipend that is better than a self employed lackey can muster, even with a 7-day week.

As far as I know questionnaires are submitted centrally by the HR team (or relevant person) therefore I would imagine there is the option to be manipulated. But some of the practices of a company will be fact and a more useful barometer maybe such as - charity/community policy, days off, staff subsidies etc . Staff turnover would also be a useful metric.
