I had another quote for a Ford Focus A/C condenser that came to £320 for a condenser plus recharging and testing the system.

And that is assuming nothing else needs fixing.

Its a bit steep for a 7.5 year old car, so I reckon I will just have to open the windows and be patient for the whole 2 weeks of summer :)

I couldn't live with that - I never open the windows - my AC is permanently on (perhaps that's why it's never failed) no matter what the weather/temperature.

I'd keep searching for better quotes.

It's possible that your condenser has suffered stone damage and a straight replacement is all that's needed.

A quick Google as an example putting Ford Focus 1.6 2007 model into a site shows a new condenser for that as £66, not sure where they are getting £320 from.

I had a new condenser fitted in a Honda Civic two years ago by a local mobile air con specialist for £170 including fitting re-gas and testing.

Find a local man-in-a-van air con specialist. My son was offered 3 different condensers - Ford, Valeo and chinese - he chose the mid price and was charged £160 all in. The genuine one came with an appropriate eye watering quote !
