Hi there, Hubby is on Esa support group & claims for me as I care for him at home but I do not get carers allowance as not entitled. I have been offered by a self employed friend some work which is only 3 hrs a week at £10ph which I have to take expenses out of too ie travel... can I do this self employed? And will it affect hubbys esa? I have heard of permitted work? Any advice greatly received. .. thank you

Permitted work is only for the ESA claimant and not the partner.
You can work the 3 hrs a week but it will be classed as income for your ESA claim. There is a £20 a week disregard.
Are you sure that this work is classed as self employment?
And are you sure that you are not eligible for Carer's allowance?0 -
I have been told if I take the work, I would have to be self employed.. Its 1& half hours helping a 2 ladies in their own home, I would like to do it as it would help with my own confidence plus its time out for a couple of hours and there is the chance i could get more hours & eventually go part time but I am worried for my husbands ESA. Is there anything else I could do? Last time I tried for carers I couldn't get it..thank you for your help.0

Is your husband in receipt of either DLA (at least mid care) or PIP (standard Daily Living or above), as he will need to be on those for you to be eligible for CA?
If going self-employed you'll need to register with HMRC within 3 months of starting and get ready for self-assessment.0 -

You can certainly do this work but you will need to register as self employed (google to find out more)
As I said your earnings will count as income and deducted from your joint claim of ESA although the first £20 is disregarded.
If you prefer you could volunteer. Most areas have volunteer centres so google the name of your largest near town and 'volunteers' to see if there is anything that you would like to do.
Any money that you earn will mean that the ESA will reduce so you need to take into consideration your expenses and weigh this against needing to have some 'you' time.
I am not sure why you have been refused Carer's Allowance. Since you are on a joint claim (is your partner on contribution based ESA with an income based 'top up' for adding you as the partner?) then you do not seem to be receiving any other income. Is that correct?
Is your partner receiving DLA or PIP or AA?
What did your letter refusing CA say about why you are not eligible?0 -
Hi, thanks for the replies & help. Hubby is on low rate care & low rate mobility on DLA but will probably need to claim pip soon so I was told I couldn't apply on those rates, although he does need the middle rate in all honesty but that's all they think he needs! I have thought about volunteering but thought if I could help these ladies and also earn some money then It would help! If that makes sense!! It would be good for me to go self employed so that I can work around my hubby but its getting the hours to go part time... As far as I'm aware the jobcentre do not help the partners of disabled Hubby's....I might be wrong though :):huh:0
