eBay item not received what do I do?

I bought an item off eBay 3 weeks ago. It says the item was dispatched the day after the auction had ended (i paid straight away), however I haven't received it, and I don't know what to do.
I knocked on my neighbours to see if it was delivered to any of them. I lived in a block of flats, and sometimes if I'm not in the postie will either leave it outside my front door, or if it needs signing for he'll deliver to one of my neighbours. I have never had an issue with not receiving anything in the past, be it from eBay or some other form of online store.
I contacted the seller after 2 weeks and was advised to give it another week, as sometimes there can be delays with royal mail. I asked for tracking, but the seller said they sent it standard first class.
I have been into my local post office for some advice, and they advised that because I didn't post it, that I wouldn't be able to 'make a claim' as the cashier put it. I also went to the sorting office and was told there is nothing there.
The item was only £60, so not exactly a huge sum we're talking about. If I lose the money, that is fair enough, I just want to see if there is anything further I can / should do.
Thanks for reading.

As above. Unless the seller can prove it was delivered, you will get a full refund (assuming you paid by PayPal).
You have done far more than you need to resolve this. If it is worth £60 then the seller should really have sent it by a trackable postage method (assuming they sent it at all). Its not up to you to make sure you receive it, it's up to the seller.0 -
Contact the seller first, using one of the top questions, not the I've not received my item [yet] & tell them, if you get no joy, then open a case
Always give the seller a chance to resolve the problem before opening cases on eBay0 -
If the seller sent it "standard" first class, and doesn't have tracking info then they can't prove delivery. Tell them it still hasn't arrived and you would like a refund / replacement. If they don't play ball, open a case. You will win.0

As a seller I read with interest the threads that suggest ebay push the buyer protection too hard- it's the first thing we see when we log in and it is quite unambiguous in that if you don't get your item then you are fully covered. In fact some sellers believe this might be responsible for an apparent increase in suspicious claims.
Yet here, and OP I apologise for making a discussion post rather than a helpful one, we have a buyer who appears not only to have missed the whole safety aspect of buying on ebay- but also does not appear to have even contacted the seller. Actually the OP did contact the seller."The problem with Internet quotes is that you can't always depend on their accuracy" - Abraham Lincoln, 18640 -

I agree with the above. However I do not think the OP is alone. There are still alot of people who think that if you buy something on Ebay and it does not arrive or is broken then you have lost your money. Dodgy sellers use this to their advantage. Decent sellers however lose out on buyers who think Ebay is still the Wild West of buying.0 -

It just seems that there are such different ways of seeing this doesn't it? We as sellers worry that buyers are almost encouraged to use the money back guarantee- yet it appears that a buyer can use ebay and be entirely unaware of it.breaking_free wrote: »Actually the OP did contact the seller.
Yet buyer has not gone back to seller to say it has still not arrived and is instead worrying about losing their money?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I contacted the seller after 2 weeks of it not arriving. The seller advised me to wait another week before contacting them again - so I did wait as they advised.
I was posting to ask if there was anything further I could do before re-contacting the seller so I could inform them that i have done everything I possibly can at my end.
I have messaged the seller this evening to state still not received. If I don't get a response within 24 hours I shall open a case on eBay for an item not delivered.
I do find it quite funny how some eBay sellers that are on this forum moan about the buyers who say they haven't received it when they actually did, but that they're also moaning about people, like me, who are trying to do everything possible before opening a case on eBay, it's like buyers can't win!Aqua £160.00 / EE £289.60
