I bet the cost of an SSD will not make enough difference to justify it, the truth is unless you work out what "slow is" and what is causing it, the magic bullet that people say is SSD is pointless. I just went upstairs and checked my wife's 4 year old PC running Word 2010 and a 5400 rpm magnetic disk it took 5 seconds to open a 40 page document.

SSDs are not then end of all ills

5 seconds to open a word document?
Would you regard that as good/bad/indifferent?

The problem my wife is having, is that the word and excel programs take an age to open up from scratch.

Opening word from the shortcut takes slightly less time
Something seems amiss on your wife's system, my linux Laptop take the same time for libreoffice calc/writer.

    LOl
    Thanks for that.

I had thought about getting her a chromebook or maybe the microsoft stream offering.
However, it was just a thought as she might not be able to run the programs that she wants on either of those devices.
I am not a teccy expert, so i have to do much research first

Just rebooted this lappy into Windows 7 and I get <7 secs from scratch , it may be someone here may help to determine why hers is slow, OTL may help to determine what is running etc, or maybe DDS may help
    http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/files/file/398-otl-oldtimers-list-it/
    Quick Start Guide:
    • Download OTL to your desktop or other convenient location.
    • OTL is does not need to be installed, simply click OTL.exe to run.
    • Click the Quick Scan button.
    • A log will open in notepad, and OTL.txt will be saved to the same location as OTL.exe (i.e.: desktop)
Then post the log here or you could use DDS which is a shorter log

Just looked at Office 2010 starter pack (googled it) it seems it contains ads which could slow things up considerably .....:D
Get her to try libreoffice or openoffice or kingsoft office ..... or GET A NEW WIFE (surely I meant WIFI )

    Get a new wife? Hmmm
Been there and done that, she is the current incarnation of my wife.

Unlike previous versions, I like this one, and I would very much like to keep her. Its a bit like wanting to keep XP.
I don't want to move forward to a future version, and previous versions were crap.

God I hope she doesn't read this thread :)

From a personal point of view, I use Libre Office and Open office, depending how I feel.
She uses the microsoft versions of Excel and Word because she is comfortable and happy using them...apart from the startup delays of course.

I know what you mean (I won't tell yours if you don't tell mine #2) However I still stand by what I said about SSD not being useful in this case, and because it is "Starter" then I wouldn't spend time trying to tweak it, test libreoffice on her lappy and see if there is an improvement .... maybe try the portableapps version from a USB stick. Then maybe buy her a full version of MS office.

Now I need to continue my search for the future #3 wife

Thanks for that, I might just give it a go....and I don't mean searching for the next incarnation of a wife either :)
