TalkTalk and Equifax

I'm one of those hapless individuals who was forced to move from Virgin to TalkTalk broadband earlier this year. I just noticed some small print on the TalkTalk site stating that from last November they are reporting their customers to Equifax.

So how does that work then? There are two people at my address with the name they have for me (shortened version of one Christian name), and when I signed up with Virgin a few years ago, for data protection purposes and to guard against identity theft, I furnished them with a bogus DoB, which I assume is now in the hands of TalkTalk. Who are they reporting to Equifax - me, the other member of my family, no one, or a non-existent person?

You'd need to check if the account appears on your credit file.

Assuming they have obtained your permission to report to the credit reference agencies, then it may well be that they are reporting the account to one of your files (you or the other person), but showing the date of birth anomaly.

To be honest, I'm assuming that's what's happening. I never gave Virgin or TalkTalk permission to do anything, but they don't need it anyway. They are able to submit what they like to the CRAs, and they are also able to carry out a search without my permission.

I raise the issue here to draw attention to the appalling state of affairs whereby the (effectively) unregulated CRAs just act as a kind of bucket collecting s**t from all over the place in an uncontrolled manner.

If inaccurate information is declared. Then not surprising that problems arise.
