Putting a decked patio on top of a stoned patio

We have stone patio area in our garden (approx 2 x 4 meters) which I'd like to cover with a decked patio. Building a frame and screwing on the decks looks pretty straightforward but I obviously need to secure it somehow. I can't drill into the stones underneath but there's a small grassed area all around the stone patio. Could I insert some rods into the ground around the patio and screw the frame onto those? If so, should I use wood or metal rods and how deep would the need to go?

You should be setting the whole thing on timber piles set in concrete, if you're not willing to remove some of the existing stones to set your piles you're going to need some pretty hefty timber to cover a 4m span.

Alright thanks. Sounds like it's a bigger job than I first imagined then.

Why would I put a decked patio on top of a stone patio? Because I think wood looks a lot nicer than concrete.

I am thinking of the same thing. No More Weeds between the cracks on the existing bricks being one reason!

The other is that the step down is high, and it would be one way of levelling off the drop from the patio doors and kitchen doors.

I am interested to hear how this pans out.

Can understand your reasoning but decking is so much harder to maintain. We've recently moved into house that contains a LOT of decking. Our lower decking is a place to avoid in the winter. It's so slippery & dangerous. Think seriously before you install.

I would say resurfacing the stone to something you like would be much better then putting a timber deck in - if you really like wood, you can get tiles which look like wood, then you still have the zero maintenance of a solid patio without the issues presented by a timber deck.

Are such tiles weatherproof? Where would I get them, and how are they installed?

Sorry for all the questions, but my brick patio is doing my head in with weeds, despite all my efforts!

I wonder (given that if I am going to do this, I would raise the patio level also), if I could lay the tiles on a "platform" of sorts to raise the level from the back doors.

I haven't a clue, but someone might be able to help me out!

    Thanks...

you can get them for external use - example here http://www.directtilewarehouse.com/konstantin-large-tiles-nogal-brown-wood-effect-tiles.html

obviously it's down to yourself to source appropriate ones, those were just the first result on google!
You can build up a base to install tiles/slabs etc no probs, obviously the greater the height the greater the cost...
