Scotland, when do solicitors charge for their work? At the end?

Keep seeing folk on here saying they have paid solicitors upfront to carry out searches ......

We are in Scotland so I know things can be different.

We appointed our solicitor the day our house went on the market, by telephone call. It is a local recommended solicitor on the high-street 10 mins along the road.

We are at the stage where we have accepted an offer from our buyers and we have had our written offer accepted. Both parties now just waiting for mortgage offer to come through.

Our solicitor has provided us with a rough breakdown of what kind of fees to expect and how much each item costs as a guide.

I have not met him nor paid him for anything yet. I would assume that as we are planning on buying x property and we have appointed him then he has already begun doing whatever he needs to do, searches etc. and there will be a final bill at the end.

Do I need to tell him to do things like that?

The surveyor we had carry out the home report was a company who the solicitor arranged for us. They done the home report and also came and done the refresh report which was due. I was told in advance how much these cost but have not been asked for any payment to be made yet.

Is this normal? Thanks!

You ought to get terms of business which will explain this - while in theory some might charge up front for searches etc, I haven't heard of any which do.
