Haha suggested no dishwasher to my sister and her face had the look of horror!! Having said that my dishwasher broke down a few months back and we have been washing up ever since and hate it.

I said they could also maybe lose a kitchen cupboard in favour of a dishwasher, have the washing machine where it is and just have the tumble dryer upstairs.

I don't blame her, I can't wait to get a dishwasher! Life is too short for washing up. You use just as much stuff cooking for 2 as for a family of 4, you just have extra plates and cutlery if it's for a family. I seem to be unable to cook without using every single pan and utensil we have!

Amazing how the "How best can I plan my kitchen?" leads to a load of ranting about those who have dishwashers.

NB We are only two in our household and would most certainly miss the dishwasher. Could we manage without? Yes, of course. Do we choose to? Most certainly not!

This is just me, but in her place I'd but a combo washer-dryer in the kitchen (one machine the size of a normal washing machine) and forget the dishwasher altogether. With only two people you really don't miss it at all.

But a washer-drier will only dry half a washload at one time, so not an ideal solution.

I agree re the dishwasher and most of those who don't see the need tend to be men!! :-D

We are a family of 4, have a large kitchen with dining table in it too and loads of space.

We do not have a dishwasher - hubby does the dishes.

We do not have a tumble drier either. Clothes do get hung up on a clothes horse if it is wet outside but most times I hang them out to dry.

We are currently in a rented house while our house sells and we wait for our new house. There is a dishwasher here, we have been here 4 months and never used it.

In a small kitchen I would value kitchen storage for food/tins/cutlery/plates/pots a lot more important than either of the 2 appliances.

I live alone and I wouldn't go back to not having a dishwasher! There's loads of things in our homes that we might not strictly need, but that make life easier and that we really want!

I do have a narrow dishwasher though that saves a lot of space and would be fine for 2 people. Not a true slimline as they're tiny, but about two thirds the size of a regular one, if that's an option.

I agree that getting rid of the downstairs loo and stacking the washer/drier (safely!) would be the best option.

We are a family of 5, 3kids 5, 3 & 10mths. We have a lot of washing especially as we use washable nappies. We do not have a tumble drier and I don't miss it - we used to have a washer-dryer but I only used the drier function a handful of times.

I would miss my dishwasher but if I had to choose over cramped storage, reduced fridge freezer size or dishwasher to go I'd get rid.

I'd hate a laundry room upstairs and suspect it would affect saleability. Would it be possible to move the kitchen into the lounge diner and turn the existing kitchen into a utility room?

A couple of houses that I have looked at recently had plumbing in the bathroom for a washing machine and concealed it within a cupboard...

A washer/drier would save space or even drying outside in the garden might be an option...

I wont get into the debate over the dishwasher,I miss mine when he is away!

Any space in the bathroom upstairs for WM and/or drier.

It's a more European approach but what's the point of lugging washing downstairs to wash it to lug it back up again to bedrooms?
