their systems just seem to be totally out of control
That is precisely the problem, and one of the terms of the fixed price tariff contract is that Co-op will provide quarterly statements. Without such statements, it is hard for many customers to keep a check on their account and, given the well-known problems with Co-op's computer systems, it seems unlikely that Co-op would be able to get away with penalising their customers for any reciprocal breach of contract.

  • I received a quarterly statement in Feb that said I was well in credit, but changed to another supplier in March as they were cheaper. At around the the same time time Co op energy made major changes to their IT systems still clearly unresolved, big shambles, that's clearly the problem.

Call your bank, and recall enough of your direct debit payments to cover the money which you are owed (I'm not sure how far back you can go, but it's surely worth a try). My daughter recalled last month's direct debit payment and, so far, Co-op doesn't seem to have noticed. People who are owed money by Co-op Energy are, imo, in a potentially risky situation.

  • For the record, after a bit more nagging on Twitter, they came through with the compensation they offered.

So, in my case at least, I politely kept on at them and they eventually put things right.
