Homepride vs Tesco flour?

Have been getting through quite a bit of flour as Im trying to do a bit more home-baking and today needed a new bag of self raising flour. I couldn't believe the difference in prices! The tesco own brand was a fraction of the Homepride flour but I still bought the homepride as Im not sure what the tesco one is like. Anyone use it and can assure me there isnt much difference?

  • i only ever use tesco value flour and have done for years now.

I bake tons of cakes for me, family and friends and not one person has ever noticed that it is made from a cheaper flour.

I only tend to use better flour for making bread, everything else from pancakes to biscuits i use tesco value
    Still Trying :o

Expensive flour has often been sifted several times where cheaper flour hasn't. Also, I've noticed that the expensive flour I've used is whiter than own brand flours.

I use value flour. I use both SR and plain. I make bread with plain. I mainly use three parts value plain to one part wholemeal. I prefer this to wholemeal - and I have preferred wholemeal to white for donkey's years!

It's all to do with advertising. Anyone remember ... 'because graded grains makes finer flour'?

    Nuff said. ;)
  • I have used value flour as long as I can remember...........and I used to cater for large open days.............you can sieve it a couple of times if you want, but I find it doesn't really matter...................its half the price of Homepride etc and just as good.
September grocery budget........trying for £80, not sure if I will make it though!!!!! I certainly did not last month, lost track of the final bill. Will do better this month honest.

    Tesco £57.13
    Petrol £10.00

I changed over to tesco value flour last night (used to use their regular own label) and the scones were the nicest I've made in years. No complaints here!

Im the same i only ever use tescos own and everyone loves my cooking,i have just found the hedgehog cake and my 3 year old wants to make it so we are doing that today :)
  • I've never bought exciting branded flour, with the exception of the Doves Farm spelt (for adding to bread). Sainsbury's value plain and their own-brand strong bread flours or SR do me fine. My sponges are usually lovely! Not the lightest in the world, but my high sponge standards are from my gran, so I don't think I can really compare ;)

I'm into making (my mother's) chocolate hideaway cake at the moment - mmmm. Chocolate sponge with plenty of cocoa and chunks of broken up dark chocolate. You get pockets of melted choc if eaten when warm.
