I lived with one of my best friends and we hate each other now. Don't let existing uni friendships sway you into believing a joint account is a good thing.

At the end of the day, you're likely to be living with people you've known for a year, a couple of years tops, and there will be things you don't know about them yet. Is it such a good idea to link yourself financially to them?

Just put different bills in different people's names. And if possible, try to get someone else to deal with the phone line. That's the one people argue about the most.

If I moved into a flat with my OH, yes, I'd look into opening a joint bank account. But that's because I would be regarding it as a permanent situation, rather than a 9-12 month thing.
