I use full blown Photoshop (and own a 7D) but think you are talking out of your camera bag, Elements is pretty good for the money.

As well as Elements I also have the full blown Photoshop, I was given it by Adobe during a collaborative project, I wouldn't spend that amount of money as a hobbyist!

I think to get the best out of full blown Photoshop you need to invest a lot of time learning the tool set and use it regularly enough to maintain your level of expertise. Not something I do or have the time for.

For my type of photography and everyday photos I prefer Elements because of the simplicity, it does the job admirably. If I'm really being lazy or a picture needs minimal editing I use iPhoto/Photos on my Mac which also does the job.

I agree with the others regarding GIMP, I have it on my Linux machine, it is excellent but like Photoshop it has a very steep learning curve and needs to be used regularly to maintain your skill level but proper use will give fantastic results.
