digital tv - what do people think...

One of our CRT tv's went pop last night and judging by the smell of burning it is not just a blown fuse.

As this is a bedroom tv I was looking at a 20" Sony digital tv which at John Lewis is £500 but can be had for £390 via Amazon.

As these things are effectively computers and, perhaps, prone to going wrong(?) do you think it worth paying the extra at John Lewis to get their 5 year guarantee or does anyone know of a stand alone insurance that would cost less - or would you take the chance and go for the cheapest price?

Any views welcome.

Thanks

Guarantees won't offer you much above standard legal consumer rights. Your definition of calling them "effectively computers" is quite broad and I could make the same argument that many analogue CRTs are also effectively computers. There's nothing inherent in the technology that would make them more prone to failure than anything else. Since your'e already covered by the Sale of Goods Act there shouldn't be anything to worry about if they did fail. If you really want the guarantee you could try and get John Lewis to price match (if you can find a cheaper bricks and mortar store) with their "never knowingly undersold" policy.
