Need help to work out season ticket cost

Hiya,

I am looking at possibly commuting 5 days per week from East London (zone 3 or 4 depending which station i use on Central Line, could be Wanstead or Leytonstone) to Reading via possibly Paddington.

Daily tickets are very expensive so that is out of question of course.

I looked at National Rail page and from what I can see weekly Paddington-Reading is £105.10

Would I need a separate weekly for London Underground (need bus and tube to get to Paddington and then back home) at full cost or could the railcars and travelcard be somehow combined to make it cheaper?

I do not really use trains so mind boggles.

Could anyone work it out for me please?

Thanks a million.

A season ticket from Reading inclusive of a zone 1-6 travelcard is £127.30. AFAIK fewer zones isn't possible

Oyster or contactless Paddington to Leytonstone is £2.80 each way offpeak or £3.30 peak. Wanstead is the same offpeak but £3.90 peak

    £37.70 or £36.10 for a 7 day travelcard zones 1-4 or 1-3

    Does that give enough info?

OP, remember to include the £1.50 for each bus ride in your calculations. ;)

Thanks a lot for that - so that would be cheaper than separate railcard and separate season oyster combined.

I did not see this info anywhere I looked, could you please let me have a link to this?

PAYG oyster was never an option as i will be using it in London at the weekends anyway and if 1-6 oyster with railcard combined is 127.30 that is still cheaper than railcard plus separate 1-3 or 1-4 oyster.

    Thanks again.

Why?1-6 Oyster will include buses as well.

Of course, but you have only just told us "PAYG oyster was never an option as i will be using it in London at the weekends anyway".

Without that snippet of information, how can anyone know you weren't considering point to point fares?

    Good luck.

Thanks but I doubt anyone would be using PAYG for a regular, weekly commute anyway...and I did say "travelcard" in my original post ;)

    Thanks again

Once Crossrail arrives you will be laughing. Bus to Manor Park/Forest Gate, or tube to Stratford, and straight through.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

If you use the national Rail season ticket calculator and put in Reading to (say) Liverpool Street it will give you the zone 1-6 inclusive price

It will be a paper ticket, not Oyster. You'll need a passport photo the first time you buy it.

A little aside on this ... might be teaching granny to suck eggs, but as many people look at the tube map and forget about the surface geography I will mention it

The closest Central Line station to Paddington is Lancaster Gate. Google maps has it as an 8 min walk (which makes google man a very slow walker !). Definitely quicker than messing around with interchanges or even the Circle Line, especially as you're on the Central to start with.
