No issues on report but Barclays refused credit

Options
I have a clean credit report and high rating, always pay cards on time and have mortgage etc, no missed payments. Noddle report completely clear. Applied for Barclays credit card, have a mortgage with them and cards in the past but was refused, and letter arrived saying to check with Experian, and hinted that there may have been an issue with my credit report.

Never been refused any credit before. Puzzled, tried to sign up for Experian report but told checks being made have to wait a couple of days. No probs with that, but would the Experian report show anything other than the Noddle report? I can't imagine what the issue would be. I do swap cards a lot.

Thanks.

If having problems you need to check all 3 as they do often hold different information. Obviously Experian first as that is the one that Barclays use.

Do you close the old ones down or just let them build up?

    Number of cards you hold.
    Amount you owe.
    Amount of available credit.
    Continuous use of balance transfers.
Any other credit obligations? Personal loan, PCP etc.

Lenders use a number of matrix.

Experian score is 998 out of 999 so I reckon Barclays just don't want to let me have another interest free period since I've had one with them before.
  • The "Score" is completely irrelevant - experian don't lend money so ignore it. Some people find they have a "score" of under 300 and can easily obtain credit, others find themselves in your position.

As you've rightly suggested, it's probably a commercial decision by Barclays - if all it appears you are doing is taking advantage of an introductory interest free period, they are unlikely to make any money.
