Can Council fit my new cooker?

I need a new cooker, and have chosen a gas one (always had electric before).

But I need someone to fit it.

As I'm in a council property, does anyone know if the council would fit it for me (maybe for a fee)?

  • i work as a gas fitter to the local council, i cant speak for your own council but ours would certinatly fit a cooker for you, however they are very overpriced, fink last time i did one the council charged £110 to connect a cooker, you can get this for a lot cheeper, have a look in the yellow pages for a local gas fitter ENSURE YOU USE A CORGI REGISTERD PERSON, if if your service is due on your property soon ask the lad if he does scotches, we get spare cooker hoses all the time, probs do it for £25 ;)

    Thanks James.

I have just called my council, and the bloke I spoke to said they dont do it..

Said "we have enough to do without doing that too!" Very rude I thought.

Anyway, my cooker's coming on Monday.
Could I not just do it myself? - isn't it just a simple 'plug the pipe in'?

  • if your landlords safety check is due soon (gas service) ask the lad if he does scotches or if he knows of any1 who does, dont do it yourself, yes it does just plug in, but really dangerous things can happen if you attempt it, not realy worth your life to save a few bob is it. i have been to loads of places where people have used the wrong connection, and then hammered the fitting in2 the bayonet, and had a massiv leak, used the wrong cooker flex, even seen one where they have used a garden hose pipe and selotape to connect the cooker  you MUST use a corgi engineer to connect the cooker, cooker points are a common place for leaks and the engineer who fits it will check for them. its not just plugging it in, it will need its safety devices checking, the gas purging through it, it being fitted with a stability device and its flame pictures checking. These things can only be done by a professional. You must use a corgi registered installer.
  • did you ring the councils building services or just the housing assosiation? theres normally a shortage of work in the summer, try to phone the gas department direct. If no joy just look for a corgi registered gas installer from the yellow pages, no bloke down the pub :p hope this helps

Look in the Yellow Pages, the local paper or google for a Corgi Registered Gas Fitter in your area. I had a new oven put in about 18 months ago and it cost me £50.
