Advice on car insurance claim

Yesterday my vehicle has damaged in my street. Luckily the other party left his details on my windscreen.
I reported the case to my insurance company(Halifax). They offered me to deal with the case behalf of me, but I rejected the offer and told them I going to deal with it, so I just need the other party insurance details.
They understand my decision and give me the other insurer details (Zenith Insurance)
I had a collisions before and every time I dealt with case without involving my insurer. Usually I was able to get cash settlement figure on even a repair.
When I phoned Zenit they told me I must use my own insurance company to make a claim by the law and they cannot deal with me.
Is it true? There is a law saying that?
Actually after a few minutes argument with Zenit's adviser the guy told me that I am talking to the same person who I reported the accident at Halifax. The same company deal with both insurer claims and now they want to force me to claim through Halifax even the same person previously acknowledged that I rejected Halifax's offer to deal with my claim.
They keep saying that is the law.
Can anyone confirm this?
The only reason I wanna deal with the case, because when it comes to insurance all the garages quote double or even triple the price what thgey quote usually for a private repair.
So if I able to get cash settlement instead of authorized repair I can use that money to fix even more thing on my car than the actual damage.

Ask them which law they are referring to.When I phoned Zenit they told me I must use my own insurance company to make a claim by the law and they cannot deal with me.

You can choose to pursue the third party (or their insurer) but the other side don't have to play ball.
I wouldn't mention that you are seeking more than is necessary for repair.0 -
I would have just said im trying to save them money because my insurance said they could have a brand new car on my doorstep within 2 hours at their expense.
I would try again tomorrow and see if you get someone different. See if they have a 3rd party claims department.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Halifax Car Insurance is a rebadge of the broker Budget and so there will be an insurer that they placed the business with and it could well be Zenith or not.
There is no law that you have to deal with your own insurers but Zenith are known for not wanting to deal with direct claimants and legally you cannot force them to either until you have an unsatisfied judgement against the driver and they're established as the RTA insurer.
Its really up to you if you want to let your insurers deal with it, contact a credit hire company and let them deal with it all or get a pair of quotes etc send them to the other driver saying their insurers are refusing to deal with it and quickly escalate to threats of court.0 -
He was probably speaking to a clump at Minster Law (who take all claims calls for any of the Budget brands)0

Thank you, I think it is not worth the head ache to involve court. I think I just leave it to my main dealer to deal with them.0
