    A couple of books which your friend might find useful:

    Man Alone by Don Tibbenham - a practical and straight-forward book for someone who may have little or no experience of cooking. I have this, and it's very good for single portions (no waste!) and also some which can be divided into 2 portions - one to freeze.

    There are a number of others also available online.
