cheapest supermarket in Calais

I have got a day trip coming up soon to stock up on wine and wondered whether I am better off going to the big supermarkets aimed specifically at us Brits (e.g. Tesco or Eastenders) or whether I am better off going to the French supermarkets such as Champion?

I went over a few weeks ago for about 3 days (not just to stock up) and found that for booze they were all about same price. I went to Tescos and was gutted that i had forgot my clubcard so make sure you take that.
Its like the UK, sometimes you find one item cheaper in Tescos but another item will be cheaper in Asda. It usually all works out even and you have to think to yourself is it really worth going round every supermarket for the sake of saving a few pounds?Offical MSE Fantasy League Member:beer:0 -
Last weekend I came home via Le Havre and though we didn't see a Tescos there, we found l'Ecleric and Auchan very good hypermarkets.

I'd go for Carrefour and Tesco Vin Plus as they are both in Cite Europe. Have a 1 Euro coin ready for getting a trolley out, or you cuold ask for a "jetons" plastic coin same size as a 1 Euro so you don't have to remember to have a Euro handy again. Clubcard points can only be added at the time so you really need your card soon.
We love eating in Flunch (good for salad bar and unlimited veg with a main dish) and Moulin a Biere (good for Tarteflettes and Flemish pancakes as well as large portions of beer) which are a few minutes walk from Tescos.
If you have a diesel car, the cheapest place to fill the car up is Carrefour Service Station which is underneath a car park near the Gaumont cinema and Tesco end of Cite Europe - you have to make sure you are in the right queue if you are using a British credit card to to pay as you can't use British credit cards in the slef service points (well you still couldn't last time hubby filled up over there in March 2007).0 -

Hi
Theres a great choice of Shopping in Calais. Some of the leading stores are:-
Tesco, Auchun, Carrefour Cite Europe, Aldi, Lidl, Leaderprice, Match.
Hope this helps0 -
Be very aware of Auchan, and possible others but not Carrefour. We were there yesterday just to buy a few bits and when we got to the checkout to pay with our NW card I noticed that we had the 'option' to press 1 for GBP or 2 for Euros on the keypad. You may find if you are paying cash they will ask if you would like to pay in sterling or Euros. Don’t don't pay Sterling - it is called Dynamic Currency Conversion and you lose out to the banks on saying you will pay in Sterling. As for shopping; look at Majestic Wine Calais, Oddbins and Tesco Calais. All have well known brands and all bar Tesco have the ability to download a price list. Tesco used to but have now stopped which is a bind. Also look at Tesco's price comparison site and make a note of the prices of anything you are particular intrested in. IE washing powder perhaps? There is, somewhere on the forum, a thread that has members suggestions of what to buy in France. Go to www.daytripper.net, he has some interesting and helpful shopping links amongst other things.
Bonne vacance!0
