Kodak playful camcorder - can't burn to disc

I've been struggling for days with this. I want to burn some of the videos onto a DVD. I've tried using the software that came with it, arcsoft, but it kept saying the files are in the wrong format. I've done some googling and I think it records in MP4. I found a site recommending something called wondershare which can convert these things and burn it on a disc. Problem is, it quits downloading at 70% for some reason, saying 'runtime error' and a load of letters/numbers, maybe because my old laptop is on windows xp but I've really no idea.

Could anyone help me with this? I normally use my iPad and only get the laptop out for burning stuff like cd's. I've never burned a camcorder video before. Is there something idiot proof that I could use? I've also heard of a camera connection kit for the iPad but I'm not sure if my camcorder is in the right format for it. I'd gladly buy it if it made things simpler than this!

I'm assuming that your laptop runs Windows?

Does the camera have a removable SD Memory card or do you plug the camera into a USB port on the laptop?

Either way you copy the video file, whatever the format, onto the laptop.

I suggest you try Microsoft's own, free, video editing software Movie Maker first.

Ask it to import the video file and if it can cope with the format it will import it and you can the edit it and save/burn to disc.

As long as it can handle the file format Movie Maker is a pretty good, if basic editor. I had several video editing programs but used to prefer Movie Maker for basic stuff as it was a lot less complicated to use.

I'm sorry if this all sounds a little vague but I moved from Windows to Linux and Mac for my video editing a very long time ago so am rather out of touch with the Windows side of things.

If Movie Maker can't handle the video file format I'm sure someone else will be along to suggest a decent alternative.

Thank you Mr Toad. Yes, the laptop is running windows xp.the camcorder plugs straight in to a USB socket on the laptop but it also has a removable memory card. I'll try the Microsoft movie maker. Hopefully it will be a bit easier!

I've also been thinking about using one of those photo machines that you see in shopping centres, that you can put your memory card in. Though, I'm not sure if they can burn on a disc. Maybe it's just photos.
