We have a desktop PC and laptop connected to a broadband connection. Each PC has its own modem, although one is not used when the main PC is being used. The two computers are wired together and both have their own filters. We've been sharing a net connection for quite a few year now with no problems.

    Good luck

It's the same solution as having another phone in the house.
Buy a telephone extension lead and plug it into your laptop, if you want to use both you may need a double adaptor.

If it's a relatively new laptop he has or if you're buying one get one that you can hook up wirelessly then he can use it all over the house not just in his room without any cables etc :D
