Making my wedding dress

Hi all, my fiance and I have been engaged for just over a year now, and are getting married next April
After spending ages and ages trying to find the perfect dress, and after much deliberation and research, I've decided to make my own dress! however it is quite money-saving, as my favourite dress I tried on in store was over £3k! and I'm expecting this dress to cost me around 10% of that
For the wedding we're having an art deco theme, so I'm going to make something quite sleek, not a ballgown or anything like that.
I was thinking of starting this thread to kind of document my progress, and have a record as the dress develops over time!
I've got myself a pattern and some cheap fabric to start out with, so that I can make a quick mock up of my dress to start with, before I get some nice satin and chiffon to make the real thing!
Are there any other Brides out there who are or have made their own dress? I would love to hear if there are!
If anyone is interested in seeing my progress, I'll update this thread with pictures as I go along the way!
Wish me luck!

I have limited skills when it comes to sewing - but did not find a dress to fit my tastes - i did find a pattern and had a family friend who has exceptional sewing skills the fabric cost £36 (including the zip) she tried to charge £100 but we gave her a cheque for double that - still a bargain .. if you have the skills go for it - you get the dress you want at a good price!!
let us know how you get on.
good luck with your dress.Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0 -
Exciting :T
No personal experience but I'd love to make my own dress for a wedding. It'd be unique and should fit you well. Especially with a year to make it you can start now and have time to do the practice dress etc.
Good luck~~~~~~~~~~
If you’re generally healthy and aged between 17 and 65, do something amazing....
Give blood

Good Luck, i've subscribed to your thread to see how you get along.... and whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should ...0

Our wedding is going to end up with a similar theme, but I got a dress from phase 8, which is technically an evening dress rather than a wedding dress and that was under £300 as I got it in the sales. £25 to a local shop to check all the beading and all done.
Just putting this in as an option...0 -
My friend had a seamstress friend of the family who made her dress. It was gorgeous and very unique, but if you are having a hoop at all (ie for a fishtail dress), make sure you have enough layers in the underskirts as her hoop did show through the material of her skirt slightly.
Good luck!0 -
Hi all, thanks for the replies!
Sillyvixen that sounds amazing, and such a bargain compared to some of the dresses in the bridal shops! Plus you get something unique!
Arbrighton that sounds lovely, I searched high and low trying to find a dress I liked, like I say I've been engaged for over a year and haven't managed to find a single thing, so frustrating!
Stir_crazy that's a good point, fortunately I'm having a sheath style skirt with only a slight flare at the bottom so won't need anything underneath it.
The dress I tried on at a bridal shop was the esme by Jenny Packham, which was gorgeous (but soo expensive!) and although I really liked it it just wasn't worth the cost for me!
I spent most of the bank holiday weekend working on the first 'draft' of my dress. The pattern I've chosen is called new look 6130, it's a skirt and top separates pattern that I'm going to adapt and join to make a floor length sheath style dress with princess seams. I cut my pattern out using my cheap material at the weekend and put most of it together, and I'm quite exited about it so far! I'll post some pics tomorrow when I've got time to go on the desktop (it doesn't work when I do it on the tablet for some reason)

Jobo I've sent you a PM with a link to my dress. Phase eight have got some nice dresses. I spotted one that I liked and that was the only one I tried.0

Thanks for the link arbrighton - your dress is gorgeous!
pic as promised![/IMG]
that's it for the moment, I haven't joined the top and the bottom yet, and haven't added the top layer of chiffon to the skirt, but I'm pleased with how it's going so far! I'm going to keep on with it this weekend so hopefully I'll make some more progress!

That is so pretty, I love it! Your very clever to be able to make it - I brought mine from a sample sale as making curtains is about all I can handle sewing wise.
Cant wait to see a pic when its all finished and congratulations on your engagement0 -
