student house gas/elec

Me and three friends are renting a house, but only one of us is living there at the moment. One friend has told me that our supplier for elec/gas is Scottish Power, and that we're on some 'daily fee' deal right now. I feel really out of the loop regarding our suppliers, and was wondering if someone could help me. Is this a bad deal?

Apparently uswitch told my friend that if we switch to Atlantic, we could get it cheaper, but I don't know anything about any of this as my friend is the one with the details.

What deal is best for a student house? Hope you clever moneysavers can help! :T

The 'daily fee' will probably be a standing charge. Some suppliers have these, others charge a higher unit price for the first so many units you use per quarter instead. It is basically to cover the cost of piping the gas and maintaining the meter (not the cost of the gas itself).

You best bet is to use a comparison service such as energyhelpline to identify the cheapest provider for your region and circumstances

    It depends on:

    Where you live.

    How much gas you use.

    How much electricity you use.

What method you will pay your bills (pre pay, Direct debit, quarterly billing) Bear in mind that utility companies tend to be wary of students.

Your best bet is to stay with your current company for a few weeks until you get some indication of consumption. Armed with that knowledge you can make some informed decisions.

Nobody, but nobody, on this forum can give you any firm advice on which company is best for your circumstances. You don't know what those circumstances are; and neither do we!

FWIW I swicthed to Atlantic a while back and I've been very impressed generally.

My bills are pretty cheap anyway (£14 electic and £22 gas pm), but I'm also getting my 12th month free every year (to counter tarting I guess).

    Martin's got an article somewhere.
  • not sure if you're calling me vague, but i only had the info given to me by my friend as i don't live in this house yet. so it's best to just stay with my current provider and see how we go? :) thanks
