I always assumed it was car as in the Ka being the English representation of the character, and the whole thing being a clever pun.

If they wanted me to say kay-ay then they would have written it K.A. or KA even.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

a friend (60+) who owned one called it a 'ca' (like 'cat' without the 't'), but he was a bit weird anyway.

I always thought it was 'ca like cat' and I'm not 60+ or weird.

    +1

Although as a Scot, we don't put random 'R's on the end of words. Hence why I cringed when JessicaR Ennis and NicolaR Adams won their Olympic golds!

May be an age thing. I've always assumed it was 'car' from the original adverts, and a friend (60+) who owned one called it a 'ca' (like 'cat' without the 't'), but he was a bit weird anyway. I had never heard it called Kayay until recently, and always from young people.

I'm sure someone who worked in a Ford dealership will be along any minute and can settle this :)

I prefer to think of it as "Ca" too, like Cack but without the ck.

    Cruel.

To clarify, as people have been mentioning intrusive Rs (like JessicaREnnis), the pronunciation I use is like 'cah' with no final R. So we have me for Cah, several for Cack, and none for Kayay. Fine, let's leave it there. Thank you.

The mechanics I go to call mine Kay-ay. I call it the same, because when you pronounce it 'Kar' it sounds like you are saying 'my car' and when people say what type of car do you drive and you say 'Kar' and they hear 'car' it is just too much hassle. I think originally they were pronounced 'Kar' but it seems to have changed maybe for this reason - to avoid annoying misunderstandings/jokes.:)
