PPI refund cheque "reversed" by Barclays

I was recently in receipt of a cheque from Barclaycard for missold PPI, a relatively large amount. I presented the cheque to my Barclays current account. The cheque amount appeared in my account for a brief period and was extracted very shortly marked "reversed". Is this a legal action by the bank? or is it equivalent to "stopping/countermanding"? which probably isnt. Enquiries into this have been unhelpful as the issuing Barclaycard office seems to be less informed of any progress on each call I make. Any suggestions on a legal approach to this.Can it be pursued in the same way as if a private individual had blocked a cheque to me?

I would ask them why they have done it in the first instance.

Tried that. No reason offered and a general inability to identify anyone who might offer a reason

Send an e-mail to bob.cliff@barclays.com asking him why it has been cancelled and why he has no staff with the wherewithall to tell you when you called.

Good outcome. Contacted Ombudsman about irregularity of the situation. They were extremely supportive and contacted Barclaycard. Payment was made in 10 days,( this time by BACS!)
Thanks for advice, it would have been next option.
