Travel insurance to cover terminal illness

I know that this is going to sound like a really callous question. My Father in Law has progressive cancer and he is now on the last line of treatment. His consultant doesn't know if he'll respond or if he is going to deteriorate.

We have booked as a family, me, hubby and 2 Kids to go to Italy in the summer. If the worst happens and we have to cancel due to my father in law deteriorating I would like to be covered so that we could book again.

The kids are really looking forward to going but I know that if things turn out for the worst they would rather spend the time with their grandad, but eventually a family holiday would be a good idea at a later date but we wouldn't be able to afford to book and pay for another if we have to cancel this one.

Is it possible to get this type of insurance cover and if so where would I look for it?

Many thanks.

I think you may find that where a pre existing condition is known about you will not be covered for cancelation if that persons illnes is the cause of the cancellation. Read the MSE article on travel insurance and pre existing conditions and ring some of the insurers to ask.
You've already booked the holiday - so what insuarnce did you put in place when you booked.

If it exists we couldn't find it. OHs gran was end of life, our honeymoon was at the same time. We couldn't find anyone to insure against it. We went anyway and thankfully she is still around. It was a hard decision and we almost didn't go.

When I read through my insurance it did talk about other insured losses which mentioned pre existing conditions of us or others and from what it said I go the impression that had I got the insurance over the phone they may have insured it for an extra cost, but how much extra I don't know.

Wow, no abusive lecture about how they should have gotten travel insurance at the time of booking - that makes a nice change!

To answer the question (which doesn't sound callous at all), while you can get insurance to cover pretty much anything if you spend enough on it, you will not find a normal policy anywhere that will cover such a high risk. The policy would have to be even more expensive than your holiday is to be remotely worthwhile for the insurer - and even then they're still taking a risk.

Sorry to hear about your FIL. Look into how easy it would be to change it to a later date, it might be less expensive than paying a high insurance premium.

I was going to say could you change it now to the latter end of the year so then either way you'll be able to spend more quality time with them, esp if your all off school/ work etc
