Can they insist I phone to cancel

I have been e-mailing a company trying to cancel a subscription for ages. They finally got back to me asking for certain details. I sent them and then they said to phone to discuss. I said that would be difficult and could they just cancel it and reply by e-mail. They replied that they can't cancel any other way. Can they insist that I phone?

They can choose not to accept cancellations via email.

Writing to them (an actual letter) will certainly be something they cannot refuse.

So your choices are call them, or write to them.

Of course they can insist on you cancelling the subscription by phone... if that is what you agreed to do when you took out the subscription.

What company are we talking about here?

Sky would not accept my cancellation by email and insisted that for security reasons that I had to ring to cancel the account. When I rang it was quickly apparent it just gave them an opportunity to try to talk me into staying with them. The rep I spoke to tried to claim that the email could be from anyone even though it was the listed with my account.

They tried to pull that on me. I replied and told them their own website says it can be submitted on email.

Got a reply the following day to my email confirming cancellation complete.

Tell them you're deaf/hard of hearing, and to insist on phone cancellation is discrimination.

I am hard of hearing and if any company makes me phone them it causes them no end of problems because I keep telling them to repeat what they are saying because I am hard of hearing.

Good fun is had when a company phones me about hearing loss.
