free child place or diy?

Hi all,
with free child places for summer 16 being released imminently i am looking for advice. We have always gone self catering in the past and i book hotel/apartment sepereatly but net year we are looking for something like the first choice holiday villages on AI. i am also booking for us and BIL family so looking for the very cheapest i can find it.
Does anyone know if we are better booking early, getti g free child places or leaving it untill flights are released and booking separate? All help appreciated.
