However, despite what Ulfar says I'm not convinced that all banks need 4 working days to ensure the cancellation is effective. In fact, I'm doubtful if any bank starts their SO processing that far in advance.
You may be right some banks may do it quicker, but I am quoting my own bank. I know it can be longer if you use a building society.
We however do not know which bank the OP is with or if it is standing order or direct debit.
If it is direct debit the requesting bank requests the money 5 days early hence the time scales. Also if the op went into the bank and the person confirmed the cancellation then he should be able to request that they recall the money, this however may not be quick.0
