Does financial linking show up on a credit file?

Hi,
I've read through the credit rating/file guides and guides to building up a good credit rating, still have a couple of questions.
I'm a student who is going to graduate soon and I want to start building up a good credit rating.
Before becoming a student I worked full time for a year in the UK with a regular income moving through my account although I did not use credit services. For my first year as a student I barely used my overdraft, and continued to have a regular income. Then I lived in China for a year abroad, my income was going directly into a Chinese bank account so on the UK side all that happened was that my student loan came in and got transferred back out shortly afterwards, but again wasn't in my overdraft.
Sept 2013, starting my third year back in the UK the problems start. As I was going to be living in shared accommodation, I tried to set up a joint account with the people I lived with so that bills could be paid by direct debit without having to do it from my personal account. Joint account application failed, turns out the person I was co-applying with has an appalling credit rating. Since then, I could not even get a current account for myself, was rejected everywhere. Finally got a cash account with Santander with no debit card facility.
Is it possible our accounts are linked in some way since that joint application, could this affect my credit file and would it show up if I requested it? After being rejected I got a free trial with Experian which showed my credit score as 999 but no mention of being linked with anyone.
I know my credit file has some bad marks on it since as those people in that shared house left me with a load of debt, missed payments etc as bills and the account we used to pay them were all in my name. As a result of the debt I've been in my overdraft more than out of it since part way through 2014, although there have been regular payments in on top of my student loan payments. The damage to my credit file from living with such unscrupulous people who left me in debt is why I would like to build up a credit rating, but I want to know if it's possible we're linked at all before risking applications.
Thank you for any advice.
Best wishes,
Tom

Any financial associates will show on your credit files.0

It is possible the joint application could have caused the housemates to be listed as a financial associates with one or more of the credit reference agencies.
If you get your statutory reports from the 3 agencies you can then check the financial associates section. If there are any people listed then you need to file a notice of disassociation with each agency that lists them.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0
