Air Passenger Refund for flight to Egypt

Good evening

Does anyone have an idea of how to claim the money back when the booking has been made through Travelrepublic?

Monarch who we are going to fly with said that Travelrepublic has to call them and ask them to refund the money, however Travelrepublic claim Monarch will send it to them automatically. Even when I told them what the operator from Monarch said they stuck to their explanation.

I would also like to know how much we should be getting back for my daughter's flight ticket. She is 4 years old, so the refund definitely applies to her. Monarch said we should get £13 back one way but from what I read on the internet flights to Egypt are mid-haul flights and we should get £71 back (at least that is what Thomson say on their website).

Does anyone know anything regarding this?

Many thanks in advance.

Dani

you should be refunded the amount you were charged. If you paid £13 you would get £13 refunded, if you paid £71 you would get £71 back. Did they not provide a breakdown when you booked your ticket?
  • Travel Republic are listing something called "Travel Fees and Charges" on our booking receipt and say that was £101.50 for each of us. Other than that we have nothing else listed that says taxes or Air Passenger Duty.
  • Travel Republic will have to claim the APD back from Monarch. If you'd booked your flight direct with Monarch you could have done it by logging into your booking. Using a third party for flights does complicate things :(

Sharm is over 2000 miles so the APD charged would have been £71.
  • Travel Republic told me that at the moment it looks like we are going to get £65 pounds back and not £71. Are airlines allowed to take money off the APD and keep it for admin or something like that?

I checked on the internet and it seems to confirm that we must have paid £71, on the Thomson website it is even stated as that amount and I assume that no provider or airline can charge what they want to charge, it is certainly a fixed amount.

No they're not, and Monarch aren't. Maybe it's Travel Republic that are charging an admin fee?
  • Travel Republic advised that it is Monarch who confirmed a refund of £65, not them.

Hmmm! I would have my doubts about that personally, especially considering TR denied it was their responsibility to contact Monarch to claim it.

If Monarch were charging an admin fee there would be lot's of complaints about it, and this is the first time I've heard it mentioned.

The news now from Travel Republic is that Monarch claim only flights from London to Hurghada has an APD of £71. Flights to Sharm have an APD of £65. I am confused because from what I found on the internet London-Hurghada is a distance of 2427 air miles and London-Sharm is 2405 air miles, so why would the APD be any different?

Edit: I called Monarch directly and they confirmed they would issue a refund of £65. I asked them where that amount is coming from since I was advised and found on the internet that for flights over £2001 air miles it should be an APD of £71. The operator confirmed that that was what they are charging for Hurghada and I told her that I was told, and confirmed on the internet, that it does not matter where the airports are but where the capital of that country is when it comes to APD, so it should not matter whether the flight is to Cairo or Sharm or Hurghada. She was like "oh i need to investigate and will call you back"! Looks to me like they are trying to make some bucks on the side!

They stick to their £65 and are now saying that it depends on when the booking was made, not on the date of the flight? Even then, I would expect it to be £69.

They refuse to explain to me why they apparently charged us an incorrect APD, as they claim. And they told me I need to prove that I paid more APD than what they want to give us back which is difficult because Travel Republic do not split any taxes and other costs up.

    Can someone advise?
  • I spoke to Monarch again and when I asked them to explain where those £65 are coming from. They refused to explain it, in fact I was told that they do not have to explain anything, I'd rather have to prove to them how much APD I paid! And to confuse things even more the operator checked a different booking that was made around the same time and I was told that on that booking there was APD of £69.

I then got Travel Republic to speak to Monarch while I was on hold. After over 10 minutes the operator got back to me saying Monarch refused to clarify why they refunded £65 rather than £69. Travel Republic were told "This is what we have on the system, this is what we refunded. Why £65, we don't know!"
