I don't need encouragement to go to the gym there is a one at work, but I'm a morning person and like to do a quick burst when I get up. Out of the equipment I have none of them would do the job alone which is why I thought cross trainer. Carrier bags full of rocks doesn't seem much fun ;) but I could use hand weights on the treadmill

Why won't a rowing machine do it all? Works all major muscle groups and a decent cardio workout too.

Get a Rip 60 or other suspension training.

Brilliant stuff. Some of the exercises can be a bit daunting to start with (and it may look a little dodgy if you leave it hung up) but you use body weight so it doesn't take much to make it easier/harder.

Admittedly if you can get through the warmup you're doing better than I was on some days. :rotfl:

Second a Kettlebell. Also second that a rowing machine would do a job better than a cross trainer. Get some free weights as well. Heavy ones. Lifting 2kgs or 3kgs weights does very little. Skipping ropes as well and if you want to spend nothing, just do some bodyweight exercises. Planks, press ups, burpees, squats, squat thrusts, mountain climbers.

Much better than pootling along on a cross trainer.

Good lord I don't have that much co-ordination or discipline and I'm in my 50's. I would definitely do myself or my door frame some serious damage with that

A lot of the stuff you see in gyms, cardiovascular equipment just isn't very effective but so many people use it and not a lot else. If you buy a Kettlebell get an 8kg or above, even for starters, lifting a 4 just won't do very much for anyone.

EBay is the best place to get decent Kettlebells at low cost.
  • I second the kettlebells. A set of (heavy) dumbbells is a good start, maybe a barbell for weighted squats. A skipping rope and chin up bar are also good additions to a home kit. Get a yoga mat and foam roller.

Jog outside for your cardio - do simple and effective dumbbell and body weight circuits at home, incorporating things like skipping and dips (all you need is a chair).

The yoga mat will save your knees. The foam roller will help you massage your muscles after your work out to prevent soreness.
