Hi all, I have just applied and been accepted for a new credit card with 20 months 0% on purchases. I've sent the application back to the CC company, but noted on the form it said 'recommended limit £1200'.

The reason for the card was to pay off our honeymoon with it, which is around (just short of) £3,000.

Now I know that I will find out what the limit turns out to be when they send me the card, and I can call them when it arrives. However, I am just a bit anxious as the payment is due for the honeymoon on 12th May - so I wondered has anyone had any experience of requesting a credit limit increase straight away on a new card before?

My partner is not on the application/card as I couldn't see anywhere on the online form (or paper form for that matter) to add an additional card holder.

Can I add him to the card/account after acceptance? Would calling to add my partner help get a higher limit?

Thanks in advance :)

    Which credit company is it?

Ignore £1200 that's just there to say how much interest you will be charged if you use the card on £1200 limit.

Normally CC companies would like to see 6 months history. In my previous experience MBNA, First Direct and Nationwide accepted limit increase on new account.

You will get what is on offer to begin with - how you run the card will determine future increases in limits.
Having anybody on as a secondary cardholder has no effect on card limits.

Is there a reason why he cannot apply for his own card?

Now don't even get me started on starting married life with unnecessary debt!

    Thanks both for your replies.

It's Clydesdale, thanks for sharing your experience of other companies StarM.

I will just have to wait and see what the actual limit turns out to be and then speak with them about it. I guess either way I can still use the card for other things as it's 0% purchases, I am sure there will be something big we need to buy in the next 20 months! :)

My partner could apply for his own card, however I just chose to apply as I know my credit score will be better than his. He has a history of debts some time ago, but currently all we really owe between us is our mortgage.

We have been saving for our wedding, we are not paying for any of it on credit other than the honeymoon. We know we will get money from friends and family as wedding gifts to put toward paying it off too. We are not worried about debt, or this credit card plan in the slightest we are comfortable.

    Thanks again for your replies
