Like Dafty (and others), we have rather a lot of pots/planters - although not quite 2,314  - and have had no issues with removal companies carrying them to our new address on the several occasions we have moved.

We also have two very hefty planters - one containing a reasonably large Magnolia - measuring 36" diameter as well as a giant spiky Phormium in a very deep planter, but our removers in December managed these no problem. In addition we took several plants from the ground - these were mainly plants of sentimental value, such as a Peony that was removed from my grandparents' house after they passed away a few years back. It has moved house with us three times since.

Fortunately - considering we took few of the precautions Dafty suggests - we had negligible damage occur to our plants, but our removers took all the garden items (pots, plants, garden furniture, staddle stones, statues etc) in one huge load a couple of days before completion and delivered them to the garden of our new home which was 150+ miles away.

This was agreed with our vendor who had already bought elsewhere and vacated the house, so his EA simply turned up with the key and let them in to do their offloading.

Previously our removers have even taken a one tonne hot tub - luckily we sold that with the house this time ;)

When the removal companies come to quote they will list everything you tell them that's going with you. You should definitely make it clear to your buyers - particularly on the F&F form, although we also explained to ours in person - that you intend to dig up some plants.

Regarding paint, we took the unopened tins of F&B left over from our renovation project in the Landy with us, whilst leaving the opened tins (labelled with rooms they were used) for our buyers.....

36 pages of A4 notes, lists of which cuttings in what colour pots, an estimated 6 Luton van loads (2 X 3 trips), worn-out fingers, and a very, very tolerant wife.... Who'd be a gardener?

The more I read this thread, the more tempting astroturfing the garden seems....
"You did not pull yourself up by your bootstraps. You were lucky enough to come of age at a time when housing was cheap, welfare was generous, and inflation was high enough to wipe out any debts you acquired. I’m pleased for you, but please stop being so unbearably smug about it."

Gardening is like sex: the more you put into it, the greater the rewards.

Yes, there are plastic alternatives, which need little skill or maintenance, and they always perform, but the level of satisfaction they engender still lacks a certain je ne sais quoi. ;)

Actually I found when moving that it was the books that were the main problem - removers seem to have no idea how much books weigh, so they packed too many in a box and then had to either repack or take moaning to new heights. It substantially delayed them (I have lots and lots of books ...)
