lettet from debt collection agency giving me money?

I wasn't sure if the correct section for this post... So here it is.

Got a letter from dlc collections agency saying to contact them because my account is £100 in credit. Bare in mind I've never paid a penny to these people however the reference rang a bell. I did have an mbna credit card about 16 years ago that I thought was fully paid off.... Could this be from said credit card?

I've checked them out and they seem legitimate going by their website... I'm a bit stuck, don't want to phone them only to be told I actually owe money from years ago....

Any advice gratefully received.

Even if you owe them money, it may be statute barred by now if it has been 6 years (5 in Scotland) or more since you last paid the debt or acknowledged it in writing. This means they can't pursue you through the courts for the money and have no power in enforcing the debt. So you could just refuse to pay.

Did the letter give any details or was it very vague?

  • It's a genuine letter, or at least a very good fake! Website, email, free phone number.... I might just bite the bullet and call them, what's the worst that could happen over the phone?
