It is part of verifying that you are who you say you are. They're not going to take any money

I know my first three bank accounts from memory but the rest I can't.

It all depends on how often you have to use them.
I can remember all of my current and previous bank details as well as my passport number and issue and expiry date and entry visa numbers for two different countries.

I learnt my NI number from the day I had it. Some things you just HAVE to remember.

NI number I remember easily, the bank account number & sort code I don't memorise due to being able to access them easily - and I only recall being asked one of those at my passport interview. I was however grilled on all sorts about my parents, including stuff which I don't remember anyway, I mean by the time I got my passport my Dad had been dead 15 years, how the hell was I supposed to remember his birthday!
