Statute Barred and your Credit File

Hi all, my question is this - if I have a debt that is statute barred can I have it removed from my credit file and if so how?
Also when does statute barred start. I know its 6 years but I have a strange situation.
Credit card take out in 2005, credit file says defaulted 2010 but I am sure I stopped paying this many years before 2010. They tried to take me to court and get a CCJ. I defended it as statute barred. They have taken 6 months to tell me they are still awaiting evidence of the last payment from the original lender. Can I force them to admit it is now statute barred due to the time they are taking to investigate? what other action can I take?
Thanks

It will stay for 6 years from the default date on your credit report.
If you stopped paying years before 2010 you could argue that to wait that long is unfair and inaccurate. ICO guidelines from the time say where the relationship between you and the lender has broken down, which it without doubt has if you just stop paying, then the maximum time they can wait before recording a default is usually 6 months.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB
