Milliband promises rent controls

rent controls and building more council houses are separate issues
clearly using half one's income for rent is not disastrous as people freely chose to come and live in London and the SE both from other parts of the UK and overseas
and not many people pay half their income in rent and I'm sure the alternatives to paying rent is unlikely to be creating new businesses, services and technologies.
Indeed one could consider that the high London rents should inspire people to work harder and increase their income
Obviously if we didn't have 500,000 immigrants each year, many settling in London, the housing problem would be much less.
If we don't have a large working population, we've got real problems. In your world we could overcome the national debt by expelling everyone apart from friends and family and increasing everyone's overheads 'so they work harder'.
Good luck with that strategy.Proudly voted remain. A global union of countries is the only way to commit global capital to the rule of law.0 -
What amazes me about this often trotted out stat of >50% of income is spent on rent in London. Is the amount of people who live in the inner zones paying this and complaining.
If you can't afford 50% in zones 1/2/3, then shut up moaning and move out to zone 4/5/6 where you can afford it!
Rents in London are more than affordable if you chose your area carefully, however too many people choose to live in places they can't afford.
There is no easy solution anymore ...

You do you think we are short of labour?
Is it because salaries are skyrocketing, people who want full employment all have it, zero hours jobs go unfilled, job vacancies everywhere?
I have never made any suggestion that we should expel anyone (foreign criminals excepted):
quite a different matter of reducing the 500,000 immigrants per year that come here.
There is no economic argument that says the economies are scale would be improved when our population increases by another 10 million or so:
we do however know that the increasing population requires more imports of essentials like food, gas, oil, electronic good etc which require significant increased foreign debt.
Maybe you want a large immigration total to keep wages down and house prices high.0 -
I'm not saying move out of London, just that no matter where you live in London, they will always be somewhere cheaper elsewhere in London.
If you struggle to pay your rent and refuse to move, then that is a problem of your own making.0 -

Miliband defends his policy on rents to Andrew Marr
Hilarious interview with Boris J, demonstrating how to do negativity in an urbane manner.
Last few minutes were even funnier as Miliband wiped the floor with BoJo. Apparently they went to the same primary school.
Can see why Cameron would not debate with Miliband.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -
You can't dramatically reduce immigration without ...
1) Reducing the working population which would make paying off our national debt much harder to achieve
2) Leaving the EU which would lose us a huge amount of business in the short to medium term. HSBC have already made this very clear.
UKIP doesn't have the answer.
That's rubbish. More immigrants who are on low wages means yet more paid out in working tax credits and child benefit which ADDS to the deficit. :rotfl:
The EU buys more off us than we buy from it so if they refuse to trade then we gain, so they won't. Most of our export trade is to other countries outside the EU.
Coming out of the EU will allow us to become a fishing nation again.:T
HSBC is not moving because of the EU or it would move TO the EU !!! It has said it will move to China so nothing to do with the EU but taxes. :rotfl:
... and coming out of the EU allows us to stop freedom of movement and cut immigration by 3 million over the next ten years !!! :T0 -
why would a single person need a 2 bed flat?
if there is a working couple or a family then there are two wages and/or HB, child allowance etc.
It's difficult for both parents to work if the second person is on a low wage as childcare cost are prohibitive lots of people earn less than £25k. Yes they would get housing benefit do you think it's right that a person on average earnings needs housing benefit.0
