Can I cancel & have deposit refunded

Hi all :)
I booked a holiday with Thomas Cook last weekend (17/04/15) and paid £500 deposit.
After booking I received an email from Thomas cook (23/04/15) advising me that there is going to be construction work being done at the hotel while we're there.
If I had known this beforehand I wouldn't have booked the hotel I did but unfortunately Thomas Cook don't have an appealing alternative which I would choose instead. They have offered me a £100 discount as a gesture of good will but to be honest that's a drop in the ocean for a holiday costing over £4000.
Am I within my rights to have my deposit refunded as all the facts were not available to me at the time of booking?
Your help and advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanks :)

If they knew about the building work when you booked it would have come up as an errata on the travel agents system, or in the important information online. As it didn't, it probably wasn't know about.
Presumably you've had all your options set out? Was one of those a refund? If not, it will probably be because the work isn't going make much impact on your enjoyment. If it was major works you would get offered a refund automatically.

A friend insisted on being moved to another hotel because of construction work planned beside his hotel.

He had to fight for it but did get moved.

Which hotel is it have you looked on trip advisor to see if there is any one mentioning building work before the time that you booked.
