Hold luggage question

Flying to west coast USA shortly, and will have to take a large suitcase, which will have to go in the hold, of course. As far as I can make out there is no charge, (yet!!) for transatlantic bags. Problem is, my flight is in two parts, and the second part is a domestic flight in USA. What happens then about the hold luggage, is it charged extra for that segment?
I can see the logic both ways really, but I can't seem to see what the position is from the various web sites. Second question is, about how much would it be, if there is an extra cost?
Thanks....

Which airline?
Is it a through ticket?0 -
Changed the booking, so its with Delta all the way, just swapping planes for the final leg, so presumably I won't collect the hold luggage until the end. Haven't done this before, so wasn't sure how it goes.0

You collect your luggage at your port of entry then after clearing customs, you re-check it through to your final destination.
Only if you have a layover (overnight) before you catch your final domestic flight will there be a risk of a charge.0 -
That's a big help, thanks...0
