Ok, quite why someone would think I was not going to tell where investment had been made is beyond me... I came here to seek some suggestions so why I wouldn't give the info slightly baffles me, like many people I'm not great at understanding these things I just want my saving to do as well as they can
For 8yrs I invested £81pcm in a Legal and General stocks n shares isa to pay off an endowment mortgage, I then changed this in 2008 to an ISA with Sterling £125 pm with units in JPM nat resources, Jupiter merlin growth portfolio Henderson emerging markt opps Aberdeen emerging markts and M&G managed growth,no secrets no shame also no luck.
Yes I'm fully aware of the stock market crash
I wasn't aware that there'd be a smug person on these forums
Anyway like I said no secrets... This is all the info I have, I'm looking for some advice of what to do with my 17.5k
I realise my "gamble" hasn't paid off in the high risk isa's however I'm clearly not a total mug as I've saved quite a lot of money and not wasted it.
Looking for pleasant helpful advice not smugness
Look forward to any kind thoughts

There really is no need for that.

You were asked 4 times by different posters, myself included, to say what you had invested in which had proved so disastrous over such a long period. You had also posted on your thread 3 times since the question was asked, but still didn't answer.

Even now, you haven't said what you invested in during the earlier period.

The first sentence under ISA - Individual Savings Account explains that "An ISA is a ‘wrapper’ designed to go around an investment, to make it tax-efficient".

    http://www.legalandgeneral.com/investments/isas/?utm_source=googlecouk&utm_medium=ppc&utm_network=google&utm_group=LandG_ISA_StocksandShares_BM&utm_campaign=q1&utm_device=desktop&utm_term=legal+and+general+stocks+shares+isa_bm&cid=ggl_ISA_3031&trkid=V1ADW157743-2925473110-k-%2Blegal+%2Band+%2Bgeneral+%2Bstocks+%2Bshares+%2Bisa-70844879950-b-s

It is what is inside that wrapper which determines whether your investment gains or loses money.

Charges also have an impact. I haven't checked how Sterling or L&G charges compare.

If I came across as being smug, that was not my intention and I apologise.

Maybe try reading Tim Hale's Smarter Investing book.

It gives you an understanding of different types of assets (equities, bonds etc..) and how to have a balanced porfolio of investments.

Ultimately you might want to end up looking at index trackers, such as Vanguard Lifestrategy or Legal and General Multi index which give you a blend of equities, bonds and property (in the case of L&G). They have various different levels of equity/bond mix depending on risk.

But I would give the book a go first as gives you the basics and if you understand it better, you might have more confidence in which sort of funds to go for.

Just remember that nobody knows what the stock market is going to do, so all you can do is have a diversified mix of assets and of course time to ride out the troughs.
