Cheap Text Books - Amazon.com

Hi Everyone,

I am not a full on student but am currently undertaking a professional qualification in relation to my job, called an MCSE.

For this I need to buy some serious text books and have found a way that works for me, of saving quite a few pounds in the process - amazon.com

Now, Amazon is no secret I know but here's the deal:

I need to purchase some books:

At Amazon.co.uk they cost £88.39 with free delivery

At Amazon.com they cost $85.99 with $12.99 delivery to the UK.

If you currency convert the purchase from Amazon.com (US) to GBP, due to the Exchange rate the cost of the books (with delivery) is just £48.90 !!!

That is £88.39 minus £48.90 - A SAVING of £39.49 on UK prices....

Buy your books from the US and save yourself a packet.

I hope this saves some people some cash....

Mike

  • This is a great idea, but be careful with some subjects. Often there are variations between US and UK books to take into account the differences between the two cultures, particularly in the areas of medicine, law, social care - so make sure that the US version is suitable for your study before you purchase.

    Good advice David.

For my particular subject I believe the books are all the same but from what I have been told always check the ISBN numbers when buying abroad, if these are the same then the content should be exactly the same, and I know students usually receive reading lists with ISBN numbers inserted anyway so it would be foolish to go for a differnt ISBN if you have a particular one stated.

Don't forget any customs charges (for goods which aren't classed as a gift and are over £18) which may arise and would eat into any savings you might have made!

They would wipe out the savings completely! x

So ensure your parents buy the books for you, as a gift! ;)

Customs charges are a factor without a doubt, but considering you are basically halving the price of the books in the first place, I doubt that it would wipe out the whole of your saving.
  • i just wanted to add, when i was buying my books from Amazon UK recently, I was going to get them from the marketplace, but found that with free delivery from the main Amazon UK site, I would only need to pay about a tenner more to get them all brand new!

edited to say: check the postage on amazon marketplace before you buy them, basically, in case it's cheaper to buy them all new with free delivery :) HTH
