Prize not quite as expected

A friend of mine won one of the "£100 worth of Swarovski Jewellery" comps on the Social Discount Network FB page - what they actually received was a plastic necklace (thin plastic silver coating over clear plastic you can see where it is worn a bit on the edges) with 10 crystals stuck to it. The accompanying image to the comp was 3 rings, so they thought that was what they would win (I noticed their latest comp actually specifically says you win the rings) - I assume there is no recourse for this, because the prize was implied rather than specific? Although there is no way the plastic necklace they received (literally arrived in a plastic bag, with no mention of Swarovski or Swarovski Elements) is worth £100! Best to just leave it and chalk it up to experience?

The Advertising Standards Authority regulates competitions, and yes, mis-describing a prize is against the rules. There is no cost to make a complaint to the ASA, and it may help others to avoid being misled in the future. I would have thought that if it was described as being "£100 of..." then it there should be some basis on which to claim that to be its value.

If the competition was entered using a premium rate phone line or premium rate text message, then PhonePayPlus also regulate.

This reminds me of that old one:

"40 cigarette lighters - great for car boot sales etc."

... receive a box of matches.
